Thanksgiving
0 salutes

Yeah, I had one. Everything went well until the brother-in-law and his family showed up, (arriving just as we had made plans to eat without them). Weeks ago, my wife and her sisters had decided on a gift-giving plan for Christmas. We have a large family. This year, everyone was to draw names, and buy that person a gift. Save time and money. Brother-in-law, after the Thanksgiving dinner was complete, said he had a different plan. Everyone bring one gift for each of their own children and they can open it there. Supposedly, he was doing this for his mother's sake. How can you ask her to draw a name and buy for only one of her kids or grandchildren? After a one-hour debate that my wife was too upset to participate in, we drew names as originally planned. If you didn't want to participate, don't draw. You can then buy as many or few gifts as you choose. Mom-in-law did not draw, of course. My wife was another 20 minutes in the bedroom trying to pull herself together.

Brother-in-law's step-son (got that?) found out one of the names our kids had drawn was his (step-son's name). He asked my wife to give his name to another nephew because he did not like the gift we gave him last year and the other nephew would get him "something really good." My wife just looked at him and told him no.

Sister-in-Law called brother-in-law and told him he was out of line, he upset his mother and my wife. Brother-in-law called the next day and apologized to Mom-in-law for upsetting her, but has not said one thing to my wife. I will hold my tongue until the family Christmas party is over to try to squeeze some sort of family harmony out of all this for a short period of time. And people wonder why I say Bah Humbug to the whole thing.

I feel for you.

Christmas and Thanksgiving has totally gotten out of hand. We all need to find a way to simplify our lives in a positive way.
