Are there parallels between the Roman Empire and America? Let's take a peek and see if any exist.
The first thing that comes to mind is that Rome was all about conquering other countries and bringing them under their rule. Some would say that America is not about conquering, but about helping other nations find their own freedom. If we look closer and think back to the civil war we might remember that there were some states and territories that disagreed with the original thirteen colonies on how to run things. Thus we do see conquering took place just within our own borders.
Secondly, the Romans had politicians in the Senate who supposedly represented the interests of Romes masses. In the beginning it worked beautifully, but over time greed and corruption made the Senate ineffectual and the only interests served were those of the polictians and they did little to represent the common people. Sound familiar yet?
Lastly, the Romans filled their city with slave laborers. Thousands were brought to Rome from the defeated countries Rome now ruled. The outsiders vastly outnumbered the true Romans. The leaders of the Roman Empire, the Emperors were so fearful of being dethroned or killed that they could do little more that bend to the will of the corrupted Senate and the special interest groups who threatened to overthrow the government if their wishes were not fullfilled. In the end, Rome fell. The most powerful nation in the civilized world collapsed because of a weak and corrupt government and too many non-Roman citizens draining the government funds and food stores and by backing the opposing party wanting to overthrow the Roman rule.
If any of tis sounds familiar, It Should! Are we Americans not facing the very same problems? Can we be saved from certain doom? Only time will tell. Perhap if the majority of Americans can find a backbone and read and follow the Constitution and its Ammendments and quit electing fools into office who only seem to worry about their next election and little else. Maybe we can save the most wonderful country in the world from falling to the side like the once great Roman Empire.
