You know, maybe it's just me, but I had though that the idea behind the American Legion was to be a patriotic, mutual-aid veterans organization, one inclusive for *all* veterans, regardless of whom we may or may not worship. As for the Pledge of Allegiance and the national motto, that dates to the early 1950s and the Red Scare. I rather miss the original national motto: E Pluribus Unum, which was far more inclusive than the current motto.
