Nick Moffatt has climbed mountains and glaciers, ran cross-country and white-water rafted. Now he is walking across America from New York to Los Angeles for the purpose of raising funds for two charities he believes can make a difference to soldiers and their families; The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund and The Royal British Legion.
Born in Michigan to British parents, the family returned to the UK when Nick was five. Although Nick, 29, holds dual nationality, he has spent most of his life in the UK with only a few visits to the U.S.
After a weekend spent with younger brother Chris (known as Topper), who is in the British Army and served with the Coldstream Guards in Iraq, it got Moffatt to thinking about those soldiers and families who weren't as fortunate with a safe return of a loved one.
"Just because Topper wasn't hurt or killed didn't give me the right to carry on as normal. So, I chose my charities - The Royal British Legion and The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund."
Beginning in New York on June 15th, Nick is walking across America toward his destination of Los Angeles. He's presently hiking through the Rockies.
"I have planned, organized and funded (with a partial loan from my family!) the entire walk myself, including setting up the website and keeping it updated. Many people have walked the states before, but in sections, with backup or with lots of money to burn. I want to prove that anyone can do anything if they put their minds to it."
Nick is recording his journey in a daily blog, which also includes links for donations to the causes he's supporting. The journal of his journey is informative and amusing along with showcasing some great photos taken along his way.
