What is OURVOICE?
OURVOICE is the newest project from The American Legion, offering members a way to communicate with The Legion, and our new online community. OURVOICE is a free service available to all active Legion members, and it takes only a few moments to register and interact!

I have joined OURVOICE, now what?
Once you have registered, you are ready to begin interacting with the community in any of the following ways:
- Your OURVOICE ranking You are given points in the OURVOICE system based on your interactivity within the community. You will gain points for such activities as creating a blog entry, commenting on other users' blogs, as well as commenting on Legion stories. As you earn OURVOICE points, you will be given status-based abilities within the community.
- My account By clicking on your account, you will see how you appear to the community. When other users read your blog, comments, or search for you, they learn about you by your account page. You can customize your location, a blurb about yourself, change your system photo, view your archival blog entries and view your friends. We encourage users to keep their information current and accurate to aid others in their user searches.
- My messages One of the most important areas of your OURVOICE toolbox, "My Messages" is the single area where your communications will be displayed. You will receive messages from friends, prospective friends, and OURVOICE system administrators. You will be notified in this area should any major system changes occur or features be added to OURVOICE. You can also use the "My Messages" area to send messages to friends.
- My friends Any friends you have made through OURVOICE will be displayed on this page. You can click a friend's profile and will be provided with the option to send a message to a friend, remove existing friends, and more. When clicking on "My friends", you will be provided with a view of current friends, as well as a tab at the top of the page that says "Search". By clicking on search, you will be able to use advanced search tools to find other members by searching war era, location, user name or service branch.
- My blog You will use this area to publish the content that you feel is important. By creating your blog, you create content that will be viewable throughout the internet as well as the OURVOICE site. Your created content will help other like-minded Legion members find you and interact with your posts.
I posted a blog, but it doesn't look right. What did I do wrong?
You probably didn't do anything wrong. Bloggers will often include text from other sites along with their own text when submitting to sites like OURVOICE. When you copy from other sites though, you might be bringing formatting from that site into ours, and that can create formatting problems.
The easiest solution is to use our "Paste as plain text" button on the toolbar of the blogging page. When you copy text from another site and are ready to put into your blog on OURVOICE, you can click the "Paste as plain text" button and you will be provided with a popup window for you to paste your text into. Upon clicking "update" on this popup window, you will put your copied text into your blog, but without and formatting from the site you took it from. You should be able to submit your blog and won't see odd formatting from the other site.
I have a question or problem, how can I contact an administrator?
We provide users with several options to contact us. If you scroll to the bottom of any page, you will see a "Contact" link. The contact link is for users who are having issues with the functionality of the site or are having technical difficulties registering or using OURVOICE. By clicking this, you be taken to a contact page that will automatically fill in your name and email. You can compose a question on this page and it will be sent to an administrator's email. Our administrators will reply to your questions as quickly as possible.
As a second option, we have made a user named "Moderator" who is automatically set as a friend to all users. This user is intended to receive questions or complaints about a particular user or piece of content. If logged in users visit the "My Friends" link in their toolbox, they can message the Moderator who will answer their question in a timely manner. If the Moderator's online status is set to "online", they should get an answer in a few moments. Replies to questions submitted to the moderator will be sent to the "My Messages" area of OURVOICE.
How safe is my personal information on OURVOICE?
OURVOICE only uses your Legion membership ID to verify that you are a member during registration. All other information is held on seperate servers, apart from OURVOICE. As with all social networking sites, you should never include personal information in your profile, and OURVOICE adminstrators will never ask you for personal information. If you are approached by anyone asking for personal information in the name of OURVOICE, please contact the site administrators.
