Legion to White House: Don't Bill Our Heroes
4 salutes

Editor's Note: Your response has been overwhelming!

Our National Headquarters phones and email boxes in Indianapolis and Washington, DC have been flooded with calls concerning the President's proposal to bill private insurance companies for VA treatment of wounded heroes' injuries and disabilities. Our mail boxes are jammed full with hundreds of messages and we are responding as quickly as possible. If your message is not returned, please understand that we are simply overwhelmed by your good thoughts and wishes and we appreciate each and every one. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.!

WASHINGTON, DC (March 16, 2009) – The leader of the nation’s largest veterans organization says he is “deeply disappointed and concerned” after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered  service-connected disabilities and injuries. The Obama administration recently revealed a plan to require private insurance carriers to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in such cases.

“It became apparent during our discussion today that the President intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan,” said Commander David K. Rehbein of The American Legion.  “He says he is looking to generate $540-million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it.”
The Commander, clearly angered as he emerged from the session said, “This reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate ‘… to care for him who shall have borne the battle…’ given that the United States government sent members of the armed forces into harm’s way, and not private insurance companies.  I say again that The American Legion does not and will not support any plan that seeks to bill a veteran for treatment of a service connected disability at the very agency that was created to treat the unique need of America’s veterans!”

Commander Rehbein was among a group of senior officials from veterans service organizations joining the President, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki and Steven Kosiak, the overseer of defense spending at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The group’s early afternoon conversation at The White House was precipitated by a letter of protest presented to the President earlier this month. The letter, co-signed by Commander Rehbein and the heads of ten colleague organizations, read, in part, “ There is simply no logical explanation for billing a veteran’s personal insurance for care that the VA has a responsibility to provide.  While we understand the fiscal difficulties this country faces right now, placing the burden of those fiscal problems on the men and women who have already sacrificed a great deal for this country is unconscionable.”

Commander Rehbein reiterated points made last week in testimony to both House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees.  It was stated then that The American Legion believes that the reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate that VA treat service-connected injuries and disabilities given that the United States government sends members of the armed forces into harm’s way, and not private insurance companies. The proposed requirement for these companies to reimburse the VA would not only be unfair, says the Legion, but would have an adverse impact on service-connected disabled veterans and their families.  The Legion argues that, depending on the severity of the medical conditions involved, maximum insurance coverage limits could be reached through treatment of the veteran’s condition alone. That would leave the rest of the family without health care benefits.  The Legion also points out that many health insurance companies require deductibles to be paid before any benefits are covered.  Additionally, the Legion is concerned that private insurance premiums would be elevated to cover service-connected disabled veterans and their families, especially if the veterans are self-employed or employed in small businesses unable to negotiate more favorable across-the-board insurance policy pricing.  The American Legion also believes that some employers, especially small businesses, would be reluctant to hire veterans with service-connected disabilities due to the negative impact their employment might have on obtaining and financing company health care benefits.

“I got the distinct impression that the only hope of this plan not being enacted,” said Commander Rehbein, “is for an alternative plan to be developed that would generate the desired $540-million in revenue. The American Legion has long advocated for Medicare reimbursement to VA for the treatment of veterans. This, we believe, would more easily meet the President’s financial goal.  We will present that idea in an anticipated conference call with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel in the near future.

“I only hope the administration will really listen to us then.  This matter has far more serious ramifications than the President is imagining,” concluded the Commander.

When you or I loose a job or get fired/laid off, we loose our pay and insurance. Why then do Congressmen/ Senators are able to continue getting paid and keep their government paid health insurance, even though they're out of office. We should be ashamed, as a Nation, that we expect that "someone" goes and fights for all of us, but we don't seem to have the resources to take care of them afterwards? Shame on the president and all his "cronies".

If it is only money and not blood that Obama is asking for then why doesn't he and every member of Congress, Senate and the House fork over 1 paycheck. I bet that would ease the debit. And how about them giving up all their free health care? Bet they did not think about either of those.

Social security is funded through 2042. You dummies need to get your facts straight before you make dumb statements. By the way, where was your protest in 1995 when Bush pushed through the biggest tax cut in history. $1.8 trillion for the richest 5% in this country. Chenney had to come in and break the 50-50 vote to pass it. Where was your protest when you allowed Bush to attack Iraq, kill 4,350 Americans, wound 32,000 more and spend $1 billion a week for 7 years?

Military medical benifits
Submitted by Anonymous on January 18, 2010 - 10:39 am
I believe the President needs to remember that he himself voluntarily took the position he currently holds. His medical coverage should not be born by the people of the United States if he feels this way. Placing the medical care costs of Executive Branch, the Judicial Branch, and the Legislative Branch back on their own private carriers - without reimbursement in any form - would probably generate the sought after 540m.

I agree with you 100%. Think of what we could save if we did not take care of Obama AND his family. Also if he and every member of the Executive Branch, the Judicial Branch, and the Legislative Branch gaveu p just one paycheck we would surpass the sought after funds. Bet he did not give thought to those ideas. That would mean HIM giving up something. But as he said it isnt blood, just money. So what would be the big deal?

Submitted by Anonymous on January 5, 2010 - 10:32 am
If we allow this nobody would join the military. Who would protect this country then? Obama? Don't make me laugh. He would probably re-introduce the draft and still make the service men & women responsible for their injuries. Anonymous
Obama protect this
Submitted by Anonymous on February 26, 2010 - 8:21 am
Obama protect this country????? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is not doing much for us now as I see it. Sure fire solution to the 540 he is seeking. 1) Don't allow him or any member of goverment health care we pay for. 2) Require them and their family member to seek AND pay for their own health care. 3) Let him, each member of his staff , (and his wife's), member of Congress, Senate, the House, state goverment give up one paycheck.
Veterans Care
Submitted by Anonymous on January 9, 2010 - 10:48 am
It stands to reason that the present administration would propose anything to reduce spending in areas that are absolutely important and critical, in order to fund and further their liberal agenda. To propose this treatment of our military for even a second shows the true metal of out current WH folks. Our veterans deserve the best medical and rehabilitation treatment available, ***** the cost.

healthcare
Submitted by Anonymous on August 12, 2009 - 5:32 pm
Obama stated he was not worried about his and his family's healthcare, because he had the best and that a doctor follows him around. Let him and his family get what he wants to give us Americans. And let him collect Social Security the same as us. He is not Americian in my eyes. He is for himself, he lets his own brother starve. He needs to get on the front lines like our hero's and learn what it's like to be an American. I AM A CHRISTIAN LIKE OUR FORE FATHERS!!!!! AND IN GOD I TRUST, NOT OBAMA

I will be short and brief. GOD help us all if the government takes over our healthcare. Everything the government runs we loose look at where we are now and Obama is makeing it worse. HE IS AND WILL BE THE DOWN FALL OF THIS NATION. GOD HELP US ALL. We Christian all we can do is pray and ask GOD for mercy. We are shuting doors on him right and left, and expect him to help us. Our nation is in deep trouble

Being a Christian, read your bible. Because you haven't a clue on what is going on. Bush asked the nation to pray for him before he made his decision. We know where Obama stands on prayer. He doesn't! We wouldn't be at war if it wasn't in GODS plan. Like I said read the Bible. I am praying that Obama isn't the down fall of this nation. He will unless we get GOD back in Our nation. I don't think Obama is the one to do it, because he isn't a CHRISTIAN
Being a Christian

Could any of you out there who have to announce " I am a christian" really be a christian. ? And then go on to pass judgement on others as to say who is or is not a christian? That isn't acting very God like in my mind. I was taught that actions speak louder than words, and from what I have read so far don't sound like any of you have had any religious training, so just be quiet.
ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Obama has been in office 7 months and the Obama FAMILY have taken taxpayer vacations up the wazoo. Lets see, just in the last two months . . Moscow, Italy, London; Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona; currently Martha Vineyards. And not only is the first family going but so is the first 'extended' family. Politicians shouls all pay 100% for spouse / dependant heaalth coverage expense; 100% for spouse / dependants / friends / relatives to dine, vacation, travel, etc NOT THE TAXPAYERS
Check your perspective
Submitted by Anonymous on August 24, 2009 - 8:55 am
I'm a Christian, veteran, and taxpayer, and I do not trust the policies of this sitting Pres., nor do I trust him. If "Bush's war" was fought for money why is this nation so far in debt and borrowing from nations like China? Obama has on shown that he is more of a humanist than a christian, i.e. the speech in Egypt. I would question any sitting pres. that is proposing legislation that continues to increase the national debt, i.e. health care, bailouts of banks, auto industry. etc.

Amen! Obama is the down fall of this Nation. I am a Christian and I keep praying for Obama and our Nation because we need GOD back in our country. 9/11 was a wake up call. The churches were filled up for about 30 days. That was short lived. That was nothing to what is coming to our Nation. Obama is not a Christian and because of him we haven't a chance. We as Christians have our work cut out for us. GOD HELP US ALL
Ugh, the Hitler Comparison
Submitted by Anonymous on August 25, 2009 - 3:05 pm
Get a grip. You can't compare our president that wants to expand healthcare (HEALTHCARE) to everyone to murderous Hitler. Do you know how stupid you sound? I don't toss that word out lightly, but YOU'RE STUPID! How you arrive to your conclusion has to be via some other bias against the current president. It just doesn't add up and it makes me sad.
You've been mislead! Seek the truth, fellow Americans!
Submitted by Anonymous on August 14, 2009 - 10:54 pm
What is wrong with this "Our Voice" organization and media outlets misrepresenting the TRUTH and striking fear into citizen's and veteran's hearts! Obama is NOT taking away medical coverage for the military. Not trust Obama? Goodness. Don't trust the media! Reading these posts, you've been made victim of a story spun into a LIE that is meant to strike fear, boost ratings and (perhaps) capitalize on political gain. Please, I ask you, do your research and seek the truth.

Everything that is happened since the White House became his "crib"is exactly what he lied about during his campaign. I DID NOT AND NEVER WILL VOTE FOR HIM! Now of course most people will assume that is racism, its actually common sense! The facct that Americans put him in office knowing his muslim background is a disgrace and if he were a true leader he would give our troops no matter what war or the absoloute best in care, GOD BLESS AMERICA MORE THAN EVER!

Health Care
Submitted by Anonymous on July 28, 2009 - 1:56 am
The ONLY way the American people will benefit from health care is when we get the drug companies out of bed with politicians and doctors and give the American people the very EXACT same health care coverage congress and politicians now enjoy. While we are at it, lets make congress get social security benefits like the rest of us and no "special retirement" they now enjoy. That will greatly reduce the deficit and protect social security benefits for us all!
HOAX
Submitted by Anonymous on August 14, 2009 - 10:45 pm
This is a hoax, a misrepresentation of the truth. Obama NEVER said he would not cover veterans. In March it was studied that if a verteran's private insurance covered care given at a VA hospital, the Private insurance carrier would reimburse the VA. It was NEVER said that no healthcare would be given for duty related injuries! Do the research yourself, and not just sound bites from cable related news outlets or "astroturf" organizations that try to pump fear into your hearts by misleading you.

Understand what you are reading. Most folks on this post have jumped to the conclusion that the veterans would be left uncovered! That isn't what anyone is saying. Even on truthorfiction, the Truth, but cancelled and the Fiction and satire portion of the meme are highlighted. Also, truthorfiction doesn't say the article is correct, the "truth" part is just a sentence long and the conclusions folks are jumping to here just are NOT TRUE!

Yes, stupidity should be a crime. Why the media likes to reward outrageous stupidity with air time (good Lord, look at that IDOT BECK) is beyond me. Which is worse, saying the crap Glenn Beck says? or believing the crap Glenn Beck (and his equally offensive colleagues) say? That is a hard call. It's painfully obvious and it hurts my heart when I hear that kind of rhetoric gaining traction. What kind of nation is this where even one person thinks a "death panel" is a serious proposition. WAKE UP!

Oh, what a silly spinner you are. (I'm not your dear.)
Submitted by Anonymous on August 15, 2009 - 2:55 pm
The concept was bill private insurance for govt-provided VA health care to see whether some of the costs can be covered. Whether private insurers would pay anything would depend on their policies on serving as the second payer on medical expenses. Some insurance policies cover such costs and others do not. TO BE CLEAR, the idea wasn't to drop veterans from health care. I would tell you to read details of the short-lived idea, but the thing was dropped from consideration back in MARCH. It's AUG!

I agree regarding Politicians President - Congress get exact same Health Care coverage, social security, & No Special Retirement. But as much as I have had to pay for drugs, some being very expensive I must disagree with you on the issue of drug companies in bed with the politicians. Whether that is true or not, I understand that drug companies must be able to recoup there cost and make a profit. If they cannot then they will not be able to invest funds for new drugs.
