President Must Secure Our Borders
1 salute

By National Commander David K. Rehbein

Three of the convicted terrorists who plotted to kill innocent soldiers at Fort Dix, N.J. were illegal aliens. Some of the 9/11 hijackers were undeniably illegal, though one could argue that all were here illegally since none told visa officials their true purpose for entering the country - to fly planes into buildings. A congressional report revealed that in 2005 border patrol agents apprehended 650 illegal aliens from "special interest countries" (nations designated by the intelligence community as "countries that could export individuals that could bring harm to our country in the way of terrorism.").
Simply put, illegal immigration is a threat to America's national security. As such, President Obama must make border security a top priority in his administration.
In the October 2008 issue of The American Legion Magazine, then-Sen. Obama said "I think that we've got to have surveillance, virtual patrols. We've got to crack down on the employers that are really the magnets for illegal immigration. That can reduce the flows along the borders. Obviously, we got a national security and homeland security concern as well, but if border patrols are being pressured by huge volumes of illegal immigrants searching for work, that makes us more vulnerable in terms of looking after our potential security concerns." All are good ideas and The American Legion, an organization of 2.6 million wartime veterans, offers its complete support to the administration in enacting these initiatives.
We call on Congress to accept its responsibility as outlined in the U.S. Constitution. That is, "to provide for the common defense," and, most importantly, to provide for the safety of the citizens of this country.
America is struggling with a global economic crisis. But it also has a crisis in the form of illegal immigration, a problem that clearly has economic consequences as well. It's one that government at the federal level has failed to resolve and government at the local level is nearly powerless to address. Many at the highest levels of government seem fearful of making the hard choices necessary to assure the safety and wellbeing of both the American citizen and the foreign immigrant, legal or illegal.
The U.S. Code is clear and to the point: Illegal immigration is a violation of the law. And those groups or individuals who assist aliens in illegally entering or residing in the United States are also in violation. So, what's the problem? In a word: enforcement. The laws are on the books, but they are often ignored.
The American Legion advocates a broad-based policy. That policy starts with the simple premise that America is best served by enforcing the current laws that regulate legal immigration into this country. We recognize that it would be impractical to deport millions of people, but we have to at least start with a consensus that they need to follow an organized, legal path to citizenship. In the meanwhile, our borders need to be controlled. We cannot have porous borders, nor can those who are here illegally have full access to the benefits that our society offers those who are legal residents.
The American Legion's basic rationale in its opposition to illegal immigration is sound, non-discriminatory and equitable. That means no amnesty, in any form or by any name. To pardon those who enter our country illegally or those who remain, illegally, beyond their legal status is unfair to the law abiding immigrant and contrary to the best interests of a law-abiding society. America is a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws. And if we fail to protect our borders, we may not remain a nation at all.

David K. Rehbein of Ames, Iowa, is national commander of the 2.6 million-member American Legion, the nation's largest wartime veterans organization.

Are we a Nation State or just an Open Borders Region?

When Juan Hernandez,Mexico's Minister on Mexicans Abroad says publicly "We want our people in the USA to think Mexico First into the 7th Generation" and in the Illegal Alien marches for legalization we see foreign flags and signs saying .. Go back to Europe, We will not assimilate, and You stole our Land.... then It can no longer be denied that Mexico is doing everything it can to create a Spanish speaking Illegal Mexican Nation loyal to Mexico first within the borders of the USA!!

Since just today the America hating head of DHS made the stupid statement that illegal immigration is not a criminal act (when did the meaning of illegal change) there is little hope of securing any border.
Social Security Paid by Illegal Immigrants
Submitted by Anonymous on April 18, 2009 - 2:28 pm
Once illegals are legalized by our elected officials, I am sure that some industrious trial lawyers will get the social security funds applied to the new legal resident's proper social security accounts rather than the bogus accounts. And the lawyers will then sue the employers for past workman compensation cases and benefits such as social security not paid, income taxes not withheld, below minimum wages, and etc.

Put the worst of the worst that are in our prisons, the illegals that will be back in ten days from being sent home, packing a few kilos of cocaine, and let them go home..let 'em out at 10,000 feet. That should stop a lot of folks from coming here without going through the proper LEGAL channels ! ***** send 'em all back that way!
Immigration: My Grandparents did it properly..
Submitted by Anonymous on March 29, 2009 - 3:32 pm
My Great Grandfather came to these United States back in 1902 on a ship named the "Finland". He was from a place near Westfalia, in Germany. My Grandfather was on that ship also..at 2 years of age. They went through Ellis Island as did all other Immigrants. LEGALLY entering this Country. My other Great, Great Grandparents came from Finland in 1897. Both sides only would speak English here. They came Legally. It seems"legally" is a bad word today...What does "RACE" have to do with it ??
Illegal Immigrants and Existing Immigration Laws

I agree with every thing the Commander said except about making some sort of Path to Legalization. The path to Legal Immigration already exists, follow those laws as well. Ship all the Illegal Aliens and any of their offspring back to their home country and from there they can apply for Immigration.

It is about time that we put a stop to the aliens to get into the country. If the wish to come do so by the law. But as long as police like in Calif stop them and the border patrol says let them go as we can not have any to see to them at this thime it will go on. Now all the Police do is just let them go

It's amazing how today's modern "Archie Bunkers" hide behind those isolated incidents that involve undocumented immigrants, in order to do their dirty racist porpaganda work, and demonize Hispanics. That's typical Gringo tactics. Poor devils!

Where in this article does it say stop Hispanics, where does it say enforce by any means other than simply illegal. Almost 20% of illegal immigrants are white eastern europeans, so please read the entire story before you digest your crow.

The Commanders reference to the 2005 report I believe is "A line in the Sand" the problem is not with the 650 that were caught but if they only catch one in three the problem is with the 1300 that got through or how about one in ten 5850. And thats only in one year. Then one might assume that since 9/11/2001 appx. 10,400 to 46,800 have made it into our country and are probably at this very minute living in one of our many sanctuary cities. Look what 19 were able to accomplish on 9/11/2001 WOW!

A great way to slow this problem down is to have all of Congress get E-Verify enacted as Law. This System has a 99.96 sucess rate as Identifying Illegals, and also protect Our Country and Jobs for The American Work Force. A big backer of this law is Radio and TV host Lou Dobbs. I do not believe in everything He sayes, He is right on the money with this system. Go to his Website loudobbs.com and see. God Bless Our Troops and all of America Bob Ryan

Another concern I have about this situation is that I have witnessed illegal immigrants purchasing false birth certificates & social security cards that have come directly out of our government offices. I have also witnessed them receiving health & food benefits from the county using these false documents when I, an American-born single mom with 4 minor children & not making enough salary to pay the mortgage & bills, was denied any help. These crimes MUST be stopped!!! -CMZ

Undocumented Workers Give $7 Billion Annually to Social Security According to a New York Times article on April 5, 2005, "...the estimated seven million or so illegal immigrant workers in the United States are now providing the system with a subsidy of as much as $7 billion a year....Moreover, the money paid by illegal immigrants and their employers is factored into all the Social Security Administration's projections." However, since illegal immigrant workers are here illegally, an

The equation to explain the whys of illegal immigration into the US is simple: Add: Widespread abject poverty and starvation in Mexico after US corporations relocated their cheap-labor plants from the US-Mexico border to Asia, and after Mexican banks and telecommunications were privatized, creating dozens of instant billionaires and plunging millions into poverty. Add: An extremely porous, under-enforced US-Mexico border. Add: US employers anxious for more profits, and willing to e

And a very angry US citizenry, who vilify immigrants for being here, rather than blaming the business owners who hire and exploit them, the US government which lets them enter the US and profits greatly from them, and the Mexican government which is happy to see them immigrate out of their country. "Our nation virtually posts two sign on its southern border: 'Help Wanted: Inquire Within' and 'Do Not Trespass," says Pastor Robin Hoover of Humane Borders. "Without the help of immigrant labor, the US economy would virtually collapse. We want and need cheap immigrant labor, but we do not want the immigrants."
