DHS Apologizes for Language in Report
5 salutes

American Legion National Commander David K. Rehbein issued the following statement on April 16:

"I am glad that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has apologized for the language used in the report about ‘Rightwing Extremism.' I look forward to meeting with her next Friday, putting this behind us and discussing critical issues involving Homeland Security and The American Legion."

____________________________________________________________________

American Legion National Commander David K. Rehbein sent Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano a letter of protest concerning a recent report by the Department of Homeland Security which suggested veterans were more likely to commit terrorist acts than nonveterans. The letter is below.

Secretary Janet Napolitano
Department of Homeland Security
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Washington, DC 20528

April 13, 2009

Dear Secretary Napolitano,

On behalf of the 2.6 million-member American Legion, I am stating my concern about your April 7 report, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence and Recruitment."

First, I want to assure you that The American Legion has long shared your concern about white supremacist and anti-government groups. In 1923, when the Ku Klux Klan still yielded unspeakable influence in this country, The American Legion passed Resolution 407. It resolved, in part, "...we consider any individual, group of individuals or organizations, which creates, or fosters racial, religious or class strife among our people, or which takes into their own hands the enforcement of law, determination of guilt, or infliction of punishment, to be un-American, a menace to our liberties, and destructive to our fundamental law..."

The best that I can say about your recent report is that it is incomplete. The report states, without any statistical evidence, "The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks."

The American Legion is well aware and horrified at the pain inflicted during the Oklahoma City bombing, but Timothy McVeigh was only one of more than 42 million veterans who have worn this nation's uniform during wartime. To continue to use McVeigh as an example of the stereotypical "disgruntled military veteran" is as unfair as using Osama bin Laden as the sole example of Islam.

Your report states that "Rightwing extremists were concerned during the 1990s with the perception that illegal immigrants were taking away American jobs through their willingness to work at significantly lower wages." Secretary Napolitano, this is more than a perception to those who have lost their job. Would you categorize union members as "Right Wing extremists"?

In spite of this incomplete, and, I fear, politically-biased report, The American Legion and the Department of Homeland Security share many common and crucial interests, such as the Citizen Corps and disaster preparedness. Since you are a graduate of New Mexico Girls State, I trust that you are very familiar with The American Legion. I would be happy to meet with you at a time of mutual convenience to discuss issues such as border security and the war on terrorism. I think it is important for all of us to remember that Americans are not the enemy. The terrorists are.

Sincerely,

David K. Rehbein
National Commander
The American Legion

he intelligence assessment issued to law enforcement last week said some military veterans could be susceptible to extremist recruiters or commit lone acts of violence. That prompted angry reactions from some lawmakers and veterans' groups.payday loans.

There are several men at the local Tedeschi convenience store, here on 6a, Sandwich, MA. They are always on their laptops, taking huge piles of cash out of the back, they have blocked the front window, so you can't see what they are doing , behind the register anymore, and I hope that someone will look in to this. They rent apartments, yet paid cash for the business.. Go figure. They are very suspicious.
I was appalled today by local Veterans Group' signage
Submitted by Anonymous on April 25, 2009 - 2:56 am
I live in Bandon, Oregon, and today April 24, 2009 a large group of Veterans were on the street corner with many American flags and with signs warning against "socialism." This "socialism" tag is from the right wing conservatives trying to keep the pot of discontent boiling, and apparently the Vets have fallen for it. I was pretty angry as I drove by and saw what I perceive as a dislike of our new government and our new president.
does everyone hate the Vetrans now?
Submitted by Anonymous on October 25, 2009 - 1:19 am
so let me get this straight. you were upset that veterans waving american flags and rallying against socialism angered you? Remember while you pledge allegiance to the new goverment some of us still love the USA.
I am glad the veterans have seen how we have been tricked
Submitted by Anonymous on May 11, 2009 - 11:34 am
The reason you were angry is that you are unaware of the legislation proposed and already passed which takes away your Constitutional rights. You are unaware of the draconian plans to make us slaves to the government. No longer one of a government by the people and for the people. 99% of the people were against the Bailout and they voted for it anyway. If we have veterans behind us, then we have hope. The media tries to divide us by party, but the Patriot movement spans all parties.

Submitted by Anonymous on May 9, 2009 - 10:49 pm
should everyone always be happy for the way the government functions? oh that's right wait a second, wasn't this entire country founded on...i don't know standing up for ones inalienable rights as a human being. but oh no some vets who dont like how obama fired the president of General Motors just aren't "Band, Oregon" American tag? sorry friend the message isnt off a new article of clothing. they just want the best for this country. you might as well say jews instead of right wing
You are not serious
Submitted by Anonymous on April 30, 2009 - 5:10 pm
We Vets are your only hope against those who would oppress you. If we see these things maybe you should wake up and stand with your brethren. People call the vets nuts and anything they can to make themselves feel better about their inability to act on anything. Instead of being sick try stopping and buying those vets a coffee and shut your mouth and open your black box mind, they know what you don't or you can't perceive. Remember the world was flat once!
President Barack Obama has done more for Vets than Bush
Submitted by Anonymous on April 24, 2009 - 11:59 am
As a veteran, I know that President Barack Obama has done more for Veterans in his less than 100 days in office than Bush did in all of his 8 years! He and Napolitano have nothing to apologize for, instead they should be commended. Bush started a war for his own selfish aims, Pres Obama opposed this. Bush's hands and hands of many of those (commenting here) using any stupid excuse to attack President Obama are now bloody with the death and crippling of thousands of young American Veterans.
Obama has done more for vets???
Submitted by Anonymous on May 9, 2009 - 5:52 pm
Sure Prez Obama opposed the Iraq war...before he was prez. Now he wants to continue it and start more - in Afganistan for starters. This of course keeps his campaign coffers full from those who benefit from war. When will people like you realize that our governmental system is totally corrupt? As a vet, you didn't make your pledge to politicians, you made it to our tattered Constitution and the PEOPLE of the United States of America.
Obama doesnt want the vets to come home-they will be on our side
Submitted by Anonymous on May 11, 2009 - 11:39 am
He wants to keep the vets from coming home so they cant help us if they do another false flag and try martial law on us.
A couple of things...

I have read both reports. Had this report stated exact names of groups, their methods and and their goals, like the leftwing report did, we all would not be complaining. That is my biggest complaint about it. Chain of Command time - her ASSISTANT did not know what MS-13 is. If she hired him, then she is a poor judge of things. Add that to this report, and she is not fit to hold this position. The report had recent incidents in it, so the start date is not relevant.
We need more

It is not enough that this particular America hating closet communist says “I didn’t mean it that way.” This administration needs to develop respect for us such that it would be unthinkable to endorse such statement, or charge service connected vets for their medical care. These issues coming less than a month apart show the abject contempt the administration has for us. As the political face of veterans, you can not allow this administration to continue with this attitude unadmonished.

Commander: I believe that your letter to the head of Homeland Security was extremely lacking in guts! As the National Commander of the nation's largest veterans organization, you failed to show outrage at the awful insinuations that this report directed at Veterans! Your letter should have been to the President asking for the firing of that department head! Apologies are worthless! Sincerely, James W. Lucey 3135 Sentimental Ct. North Las Vegas, NV 89031

I agree. Stop being obsequious as if you are trying to sell something. You want the VETS off the list, but what about the rest of us? What about the "Constitution lovers"? or "alternate media" listeners? or people who speak out and are "activists," labeled "anti-government"? And all the others named in that report? DHS showed its true face and purpose, but a Patriot on the inside leaked the report to a radio show. You may never have known if it werent for alternate media.

Bravo to the Americal Legion for pointing out such an obvious insult to veterans. I wish the VFW had the vision of the American Legion and made an equally forthright pulic statment.
Some apology
Submitted by Anonymous on April 19, 2009 - 10:58 am
Typical liberal apology Napolitano apologized for the "language", not for the premise behind it. She never came out and said that veterans weren't going to be suspect terrorists
I agree with you
Submitted by Anonymous on April 19, 2009 - 12:48 pm
She just tried to put it in different words but the idea is the same. She still suspects veterans to be potential terrorists. The Obama administration is against veterans.
No, she doesn't, and no it
Submitted by Anonymous on April 19, 2009 - 4:28 pm
No, she doesn't, and no it isn't.
Yes she is!
Submitted by Anonymous on May 9, 2009 - 5:26 pm
And yes it is! They are pointing the bony socialist finger at anyone who doesn't go along with the likes of Ted K, Barney F, N Pelosi and H reid, and labeling them as possible terrorists. This includes those who think it to be murder of a child when one is aborted for any reason, and for those who think marriage is for a man and a woman, conservative talk radio hosts and Christians in general! Obviously, the current administration and those forcing it on us are atheistic pawns of satan!
Wake up
Submitted by Anonymous on May 8, 2009 - 4:10 pm
You are in a coma. I suggest you wake up. It's the administration that is the real enemy of us all. They want everyone dead. Wake up. They are coming for all your rights. Then they are coming for your arms (not body parts). And then they will be coming for you. You are living in a fantasy, a dream, asleep.

Submitted by Anonymous on April 19, 2009 - 11:50 am
She doesn't have to... The report says that itself. The only thing possible offensive about the report is the wording of a couple of sentences, and when taken in context of the report they aren't that bad.
Not that bad?

What part of: all of your rights allowed under the Constitution are to be taken away from you as soon as possible! are not that bad?
calm down
Submitted by Anonymous on April 17, 2009 - 10:39 pm
This article never suggested that veterans are terrorists. My husband serves our country everyday and I am not offended. To deny that SOME soldiers suffer from PTSD or other mental health issues is naive. That small group mostly struggles with addiction or depression; their devils are on the inside. An even smaller percent have the potential for violence, even terrorism. That's all the article suggested regarding vets. Domestic terrorism is a real threat, I thought the report appropriate.
who are you Mrs. "calm down"
Submitted by Anonymous on May 11, 2009 - 11:50 am
You work for COINTELPRO right? You work the boards and blogs all day and go home, having fought Patriotism all day. Proud of yourself? Do you think anybody believes there is "domestic" terrorism?
I am calm

It points out that single issue folks are possibles as well. The ones who are against abortion, homosexual marriage, and any other thing the atheistics want to list, that Barney, Nancy, Harry and Teddy don't like. They also have a larger agenda, than they allowed the Kenyan to talk about during the appointment process the media took us on last year.
Wake up, please.
Submitted by Anonymous on May 8, 2009 - 4:19 pm
It is our government that are the real terrorists. They are the enemy of all mankind and the planet we inhabit. You won't wake up until they are marching you off to one of the many concentration camps they have built all over the country, with millions of plastic coffins waiting for you and me, and everyone you know. They keep everyone pitted against each other while they rape and pillage our economy, then kill off 95% of the world's population. Do not believe me, look into it yourself.
Wake up Please
Submitted by Anonymous on May 9, 2009 - 6:21 pm
The walking dead (zombies) will never notice they have been corralled and shipped to a concentration camp. They won't notice the plastic coffins either - their lives ARE plastic. These are the "followers" (head bobbers) that believe everything the gov, schools and MSM tell them. No original thoughts, for they know not how to think. At least they won't be missed!

Are you that naive. The Obama administration knew exactly what it was doing when it issued that "report". They were trying to co-op the spotlight TEA parties going on in the country. Furthermore, they allused to McVie to frighten some people and to discourage others from attending the TEA Parties and voicing opposition to the train wreack his administration is creating. Brand the opposition as extreme radicals and racist, imply that people who think abortion are terrorist. Sounds like the Nazis
Irony
Submitted by Anonymous on April 18, 2009 - 5:02 pm
Do you realize the irony of complaining about what you (incorrectly) see as the administration "branding the opposition as extreme radicals and racists" and then equating the administration to the Nazi's?
Unlikely
Submitted by Anonymous on April 18, 2009 - 4:59 pm
Its unlikely the report was released to coopt the TEA parties. The White House is not that concerned about them as most of Americans didn't care about them. The parties weren't a big threat to a popular president. Most people don't know about the report and the only reason it came to broader attention is because conservative pundits have brought attention to it. The result is that their listeners--the group likely to dismiss the report and support TEA--are the few people who've heard of it.
What? The Tea Parties
Submitted by Anonymous on April 23, 2009 - 10:28 pm
What? The Tea Parties weren't a pitchfork and torch rebellion against Obama, they were to raise awareness of bigger gov't, unchecked spending, and burdening the American people with bailing out unscrupulous companies and CEO's. If Obama appears to be going that way then yes, the Tea Parties hoped to get his attention...not threaten this ever-popular president. Second, don't get all politically biased with statements like "conservative pundits"...it's about America my friend...and don't forget it
Wrong
Submitted by Anonymous on April 18, 2009 - 6:36 pm
You could not be more wrong. you talking about it makes your statement wrong the tea partys were a huge thing in this country. When over 1 million people can get together assemble peacfuly and draw this much attention is huge. Did you know it was the largest protest in US history? It was grass roots
The protests against the
Submitted by Anonymous on April 18, 2009 - 7:30 pm
The protests against the Iraq war in 2003 drew about the same amount of people. At least two of the protests against vietnam drew equal or larger crowds. The million man march was possibly as large (though it didn't equal a million participants either). The March for women's lives in 2004 was quite a bit bigger. And most of these protests were held in one place rather than dispersed across the country. So, people had to actually travel to go to them rather than going to a local protest.
Not a million
Submitted by Anonymous on April 18, 2009 - 7:20 pm
Generous est. put attendance at around 500,000 which is nothing to sneer at but not near a million. Even low est. of 200,000 are impressive but they only reached such numbers because there were so many local parties, each with a decent but not overwhelming turnout. However, as a percentage of the total pop. the parties were not particularly popular and did not represent a huge threat to a president that is popular with over 2/3 of the country. So its unlikely the report was to undermine parties
Approval rating
Submitted by Anonymous on May 9, 2009 - 5:41 pm
I believe 2/3 of the country is far overstated: his rating is 48 or below and continuing down! Even if it was only 300,000 attendees; it shows you how many of us really do care for the survival of this Republic and how many of you AINOS (Americans in name only) don't! It is time to wake this Republic up, before the Republic no longer exists!

The one gentelmen that stated a pattern is correct. Ther had been many comments made towards Veterans that our National Commander had to address and correct. Comments by all those who wrote in shows that we (The American Legion) are getting the word out and letting all those or agree or disagree with the National Commanders comments are at lease paying attention to the issues, knowing the American Leigon is not sitting in the back of the room waiting for someone else to take to on the chalenge.

Only an apology from the POTUS is acceptable for this OEF vet. It is time for the President to show he is a LEADER not a POLITICIAN. LEADERS are accountable. POLITICIANS deflect responsibility. He is ultimately accountable. He put her in that position. He should fire her. Didn't President Truman say " the buck stops here"? I guess that doesn't apply to this administration. Don't look for me to join the Legion anytime soon with limp-wristed "defenses" of our vets like this one.
Fire Napolitano - Apology Not Accepted - President Needs to Act
Submitted by Anonymous on April 17, 2009 - 11:24 am
The President needs to apologize to all Vets and their families, and to the memory of all Veterans of all Wars. Napolitano's half baked apology is not accepted by me and my family. She needs to leave as she is incompetent and disrespectful of the Military that defends this Nation. The President, our Commander-In-Chief needs to step up and be a leader for a change. We need a 2 Million Veteran March on Washinton to demand Napolitano be relieved of office.
