Obama: VA healthcare will not be endangered by national system

Promise made during private meeting with National Commander of The American Legion

WASHINGTON,  August 4, 2009 - President Obama, meeting privately with the leader of the nation's largest veterans service organization this morning, pledged to keep the medical care system administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs essentially as is - quelling fears that VA healthcare would be absorbed into a national health care system.
"(I) got his very strong assurance the VA as our veterans know it will continue to exist," said National Commander David K. Rehbein. "It will not be diluted or folded into some sort of national system and that the folks who go to the VA...that will be considered their insurance, so any insurance requirements (will be met) simply by being enrolled in the VA."
Another topic discussed during the one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office was Medicare reimbursement to the VA, a proposal long championed by The American Legion. This proposed practice would require Medicare to pay for care provided at Department VA medical facilities to Medicare beneficiaries - that is, eligible veterans over the age of 65 with non-service related injuries, illnesses and conditions. Currently, Medicare is precluded by statute from doing this.
"Medicare reimbursement to VA would be a boon to veterans in that it would encourage them to take advantage of what we consider the best care anywhere," said Rehbein. It would also generate much-needed revenue for the VA." The "Medicare VA Reimbursement Act of 2009" resulted from a discussion Rehbein had with House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-CA) at the Legion's DC headquarters just three weeks ago. "I am pleased that Chairman Filner visited with us and then took prompt action," Rehbein said.
Obama and Rehbein also discussed the positive effects that the enhanced educational benefits contained within the newly enacted and American Legion-pioneered Post 9/11 GI Bill will have on the veterans community and the nation as a whole.
The vexing problem of a dramatically growing backlog of VA benefits claims was also considered by the two. Rehbein said he feels the president "fully appreciates" its gravity and will do what he can to aid in its solution.
Rehbein, obviously pleased with the meeting's outcome, characterized the 25-minute White House chat as "very friendly...conversational in style" in which "issues were discussed rather than positions being presented."
With a current membership of 2.5 million wartime veterans, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veterans affairs, Americanism, and the mentoring of youth. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 14,000 posts across the nation.

I live in Reno Nevada.I use the Hospital [ which is one of the best in the nation ] .For the life of me I cannot figure out why they will do a MRI,all the test`s that you could imagine, spend money to take care of everything for the Vet except their teeth and eye`s.The Vet is allowed to have a eye exam every two years, but no glass`s or contact`s.There is a lot of Vet`s that need their teeth & eyes taken care of.There is a dental wing that has nothing to do.Something need`s to be done.

I live in Pahrump Nevada and All I can is that Us Vets are always Low on the Totem Pole. We go and fight for our Country and what do we get, Crap! Instead of having a MD as our Doctor I have Nurse practitioner. In 1997 the VA has us go in once a year for check up or else if we called 911 or go to emergency they refuse to pay for your emergency visit at the hospital. I know this for fact as I had this happen to me. As as far as dental and eye care for vets, we should have 100%, full benefits.

As a disabled Vietnam combat vet, I am glad that Obama promised not to change our current VA health care. Unfortunately, I do NOT trust our politicians at all. I'm afraid that once an universal government health care system passes, it will take very little later to incorporate the VA health care into it. I can imagine all the arguments now that will be put forward. Us veterans will be screwed again, if this universal health care bill passes. Vote to keep what we earned as they are.

so the president promises not to dump the VA health care as it is at present. this out of the mouth of the same man who wanted to make combat veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan pay for their own combat injuries. if this plan passes the only ones who will be exempt are the president, congress, unions, acorn and their families. please call your congress people and senators and tell them to dump this mess.

This statement is simply put...false. I'm so tired of reading all the off the cuff, unsustantiated crap people are putting out. Research some of your statements before you put them out. Factcheck.org, urbanlegends.about.com, politifact.com, snopes.com. Notice I didn't mention FOX News in there. They have you right where they want you. People say "wake up America", well we'd better, to the ones that their "alarm" clock is set wrong. If it's true, say it. If it's not, shut up!
